Remedial Works

Grade 2 Listed Building

Newcastle Upon Tyne

The Mitre, situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, also known as the Benwell Towers, was originally built in 1221. Our task here at the VDB Group was to make this building fit for purpose as if built in 2021…

This historical Grade II Listed building had been greatly neglected over the years and had suffered extensive damage externally and internally due to the ingress of rainwater, and weather damage.

This old BBC Site was the home of Byker Grove for some time, before being taken over by the now client Bahr Academy.

The client instructed VDB to repair the deteriorated roof and make the building watertight.

The pitch roof and flat roof structures had become dilapidated over the years requiring remedial joinery, slate and lead works on fourteen pitch roof elevations, and remedial works across nine flat roof elevations. The stone build fabric was also damaged at various locations including numerous chimney stacks. Approximately 70 tons of reclaimed Westmorland green slate was installed on the pitch roof elevations as per the conservation requirements.

Internal works included the removal of asbestos and treatment of wood rot.

Remedial Emergency Works on the roof were completed back in 2011.

VDB has recently been re-appointed to assist a further 5 phases of restoration works, and we are very proud to be part of this historic project.
